In Defense of Ash
Poor Ash has had his fair share of haters, despite being the show's protagonist. Most people hate him for silly reasons like his personality or the fact that he released Pokémon in the past. Hating him for releasing his Pokémon is pretty dumb. In over 12 years and over 600 episodes, he's released a grand total of THREE Pokémon (Butterfree, Pidgeot and Lapras), yet people make it sound like he released a hundred of them, I swear. He let Charizard and Squirtle go, but they still came back to battle. They aren't gone forever. Plus, Charizard was too powerful, he would make Ash's battles way too easy. That's also why Primeape was let go after about three episodes, I think, because he was powerful. The writers don't want Ash to be overpowered. Wouldn't it be boring if he won every single battle without a challenge? Yes, Pikachu is powerful, but he also seems to get powered down at random, especially when Ash goes to a new region. Butterfree and Lapras weren't exactly a loss. Butterfree never did much, and Lapras was essentially just a vehicle to get everyone around the Orange Islands. It had, what, one proper battle in the Orange Islands? It was dumb of him to release Pidgeot, say he would be back for it and then not pick it up again, but that's the writers' fault. They should at least have tried to come up with a good excuse and not left it hanging. In fact, the writers can be blamed for everything because they write the show, so why not just hate the writers instead? Yeah, curse them for going to the trouble of writing this show for us. =/ The nerve of them. [/sarcasm] Some people might hate him for not having enough Pokémon. But, if he had too many Pokémon, they would end up neglected and rotting at Oak's and people would complain about how they were never used. Besides, he's got quite a collection of them at Oak's now and we'll probably never see them in battle again. Poor Cyndaquil... why couldn't it at least have had the chance to evolve? So, which is better? Ash having a party of properly developed Pokémon with personalities that he uses in battle or a hundred of them rotting back at the laboratory in Pallet Town, never to be seen again? Then there's the people who hate him for being a moron. Okay, so he didn't know anything about Pokémon in the first place, but so what? That was part of the fun of going on a Pokémon journey, getting to learn exciting new things about them and about being a trainer. He was just a ten year old going out into the world, he still had a lot to learn. Over the years, Ash has become smarter and more mature. Anyway, having his faults just made him a more interesting character. Otherwise he would have been his boring and perfect clone, Richie... and Richie was hated even more than Ash, I'm pretty sure. So would you really want him to be Richie?! Ash is just fine the way he is. Well, to be honest, I miss the Kanto Ash... nowadays, he's not quite as hyper and excitable as he used to be, and he doesn't have the same chemistry with May or Dawn that he had with Misty. I liked how he was a mentor to May, but it wasn't the same. And Dawn is basically a female clone of Ash, so the interaction between those two isn't so interesting either. But I still love him.
